SciGirls Information

  • This years’ goal of the Montford SciGirls Club is to familiarize girls with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) disciplines and to inspire them in exploring science related careers and activities. Speakers will be brought in from the academic and corporate community. Students will be provided with hands-on activities that encourage girls to explore science and how art is connected to these principles.

Requirements to be an MMS SciGirl

    1. Must have all 3s or 4s in Citizenship
    2. Must be able to arrive at school by 8:40 am on club meeting day. We know there are a lot of before-school clubs and other activities. If you want to be a Montford SciGirl, you need to plan to attend all the meetings. A list of the meetings will be distributed at the beginning of the academic year. Reminders will be sent out.
    3. Must be a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade girl who wants to learn more about STEAM.

    Application Procedure:

Space is limited.  Please complete the application by MONDAY, September 7th. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

Students will be notified by invitation before the first meeting date of September 10th.

    Activities

Many of our meetings are student-led explorations. Girls are given the chance to explore their wondering and ideas and make connections from them.

We also participate in STEAM activities during our annual STEM night. Please mark your calendar now for January 29th, 2026. If you know a scientist who would like to join us as an exhibitor, please send me their contact information.

    T-shirts & Club Fees

Girls will be asked to purchase a SciGirls t-shirt to be worn for yearbook pictures, STEM night, and at club meetings. The exact cost of the shirt will be determined when we have our design. There is a $5 activity fee that will be used for the girls during this year. This includes all materials for activities and experiments. Any leftover fees will go towards end-of-the-year activities that directly benefit your student

  • We meet the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month at 8:45 am in Mrs. Emerson’s room. (7-112)

Applications are now available from Mrs. Emerson. Stop by to pick one up.

Montford Middle School by Kelly Emerson

  • Research shows that for a variety of reasons, many girls begin to lose interest in math and science in middle school. Once this interest is lost, it rarely returns. Middle school girls need encouragement to build confidence in their abilities and develop a positive attitude toward STEM and STEM careers. By offering the STEAM program, we would like to expose middle school girls to the principles of STEM with a spark of Art.

Applications will be available in late August and are due in the first part of September. Please listen for announcements on the school news and the Listserv.
